My chest heaved, the ache even more prominent as I fought for each breath.

My brain shut off. I couldn’t think. I could only feel the seething anger, shame, guilt, and overwhelming loss. And despair. So much fucking despair. I couldn’t bear it. I couldn’t. Not anymore. I had to feel something else, anything else. Or nothing at all–

He growled behind me, then his hands wrapped around my arms and shoved me back against the wooden table. I struggled in surprise, but my feet left the ground. The only thing that stopped me from falling flat on my back was his hands drawing me up to his face. His eyes were dark, but I could still see the whites of his eyes.

“Why are you behaving like a child?” He bit out, his eyes searching mine.

I tried to put space between us, but he was unrelenting in his hold. “Why can’t you just leave me alone?” I countered angrily.

“Because you are my responsibility and I take care of what’s mine,” he replied in a measured tone, but there was an undercurrent of frustration.

“I’m not yours!” I fought his grip, but I could feel myself spiraling out and growing ever more hysterical under his scrutiny. I was really starting to come apart. “I-I can take care of myself just fine. I don’t need you to man handle me and bully me and make me eat. I don’t need someone breathing down my neck all the fucking time. I can handle myself. And what I do with my own body is my business. If I want to skip dinner, it’s my right. If I want to drink or starve or throw myself out the goddamn window, it’s my right–”

“Not anymore,” he interrupted my spiral, his brows drawn. “You will take care of what’s mine. And I will step in when you can’t. We’ve been over this, kitten. You’re mine now. You need to accept that. No amount of fighting or lashing out will change it.”

“I’m not–”

“You are,” he replied, his voice a growl as his eyes darkened ever so slightly, his face mere inches from mine. “Even without that necklace, my beast recognizes you as his. He’s claimed you. You’re mine and there’s no changing it. You can poke at the beast all you want and learn your lessons the hard way, but it will not change anything.”

“Ever?” I whispered pathetically, my stomach twisting as his words sank in.

“Never. Once a vampire claims, it is not undone,” he explained, his tone almost apologetic. Like he felt bad for me.

“I don’t need your fucking pity,” I hissed, tucking my chin from his demanding gaze.

“With that attitude of yours, it doesn’t hurt,” he muttered, then one of his hands left my arm and caught my chin, making me meet his eyes. “You can keep pushing and fighting like a brat and take the consequences as they come, or you can accept your fate and work with me. I don’t like losing control, Gabrielle. I don’t like it when you draw out my beast.
